Big Zeke's Power Kids Announces: LOCAL STUDENTS ADVANCE TO INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

After competing successfully at the recent Junior Olympic Nationals, seven students from the Twin Tiers have qualified to advance to the World Championships.

NORTH BINGHAM, PA, August 11, 2010 /Children and Youth PR News/ -- A team of kids from Big Zeke's PowerKids have taken the Junior Olympics nationals by storm, and seven of them have qualified to advance to International competition. Now, they're focused on the AAU World Powerlifting Championships being held October 6 - 8, 2010 at the Imperial Plaza, Las Vegas, NV.

Ranging in age from five to seventeen, the young lifters have proven their ability in local, state, and national competition. They are all united in a common resolve to live a drug-free lifestyle, and have been dedicated to training in preparation for this event.

The youngest of the team is Miguel Colon. "Mikey," as his friends call him, is five and was excited to be able to set a new Deadlift record in his age division. His trip to the nationals in Virginia Beach was highlighted by a visit to the beach and to the Zoological Park.

Veteran lifter Florence Wilson has been with the PowerKids program since she was eight. Now sixteen, she has thirty-seven national and world records under her belt, and loves to encourage the younger members of the team.

Samuel Koch has been training and competing for four years. Sam, who recently turned sixteen and weighed in at 147 pounds, was able to break both the World and American Raw Single-Lift Deadlift records with a successful lift in excess of 360 pounds at the nationals.

Robert "RJ" Turybury, 8, also set a national record in his first national-level meet. He looks forward to traveling to Las Vegas in October.

Also on the team were Lexi Zippin, 17, who improved the American record she held in the benchpress event; Tre Stiles, 11, and Cheyanne Auman, also 11, who competed successfully in their first national-level powerlifting meet and also qualified to advance to international competition.

These young lifters balance family interests, educational demands, and athletic training in order to maintain a well-balanced life. They are looking for sponsors and donors to help them achieve their current goal to make it to the World Championships, only two months away.

The PowerKids team is organized by Big Zeke's Power Kids, a local non-profit program that provides drug-free activities for boys and girls ages six through nineteen throughout the counties of the Twin Tiers. Big Zeke's Power Kids is supported by donations from local citizens and donations and grants from local businesses and from community organizations. The local programs are offered at no cost to participants. In addition, the volunteers who staff Big Zeke's Power Kids also hold fundraisers throughout the year to provide financial support for over three hundred kids who have been active in the program over the past few years.

The team is looking for sponsors to help defray expenses for the upcoming competition. Donations can also be made online at www.BigZekesPowerKids.org.
