Doretha J. Thompson Honored by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Special Education
Doretha J. Thompson has 13 years of experience teaching children with mild, moderate and severe disabilities
HARRIMAN, TN, July 07, 2010 /Children and Youth PR News/ -- Doretha J. Thompson, Special Education Teacher for Roane County Schools, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in special education.
A dedicated educator, Doretha J. Thompson specializes in working with children who are saddled with mild, moderate and severe disabilities. For the last 13 years, she has been teaching science, mathematics, reading and life skills to special-needs kids at Roane County Schools. She also collaborates with school administrators and builds relationships with parents in an effort to get the best help for disabled students. Ms. Thompson considers seeing them achieve their goals to be the most rewarding aspect of her career. She attributes her success to her commitment to lending a hand to kids who need it the most.
Originally oriented towards a different career path, Ms. Thompson previously worked in project management for Clinch River Breeder Reactor in Oak Ridge, TN, holding the positions of receptionist, word processor secretary and microfilm processor until the project lost government funding. It was while serving as a teacher's assistant at Willow Brook Elementary School in 1987 that she discovered her calling in education. Encouraged by the principal and teachers with whom she worked, Ms. Thompson vied for a study grant at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and won one out of 10 coveted spots. Open to minority TA's who want to be teachers, UT's Project Enable allowed her obtain her teaching credentials while working as a TA. She is deeply proud to have returned to school at 35 and completed her studies at the age of 40 - this despite financial constraints and the responsibilities of a wife and mother - and dedicates this achievement to her family, friends and colleagues.
Ms. Thompson received her master's degree in special education, with a concentration in comprehensive development, in 1997 and her bachelor's degree in special education, with a concentration in modification, in 1996, both from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. While at UT, she was recognized with a number of citations; these include a Certificate of Merits for Persistence/Graduating in 1996, five Certificates of Recognition for Outstanding Academic Achievement from 1992 to 1996, and a Certificate for Academic Persistence in 1992. Ms. Thompson also earned an associate degree in business administration in 1976 from Draughons Junior College (now Daymar Institute). She is a member of the Roane County Education Association. In her free time, she volunteers as a Sunday school teacher and youth director at her local church.
