New Signs to Help Keep Kids Safe - Thanks to Community Grant From Suncorp Insurance
New signage will reinforce safety rules thanks to a community grant from Suncorp Insurance and the Queensland Police Service (QPS)
January 26, 2012 /Children and Youth PR News/ -- New signage will reinforce safety rules at the drop off / pick up zone at Greenslopes State School, thanks to a $2000 community grant from Suncorp Insurance and the Queensland Police Service (QPS).
The grant is one of 23 awarded to community groups throughout Queensland for initiatives that promote road safety and reduce crime or the fear of crime.
The Greenslopes State School Parents and Citizens Association will use the grant to install three new message boards that educate parents and carers about rules for using the drop off/pick up zone.
The zone is designed to allow parents and carers to drop off or meet children close to the school gate, without having to park their car. The signs are part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing congestion around the school and keeping kids safe as they enter and leave the school grounds.
The signs will be changeable and students will be involved in the project by creating meaningful and eye-catching messages to be displayed.
Suncorp Insurance Executive Manager, Martin Weatherhead, said: "Cars and kids are a hazardous combination, so anything that can be done to reduce that risk is worth it."
Coorparoo Officer in Charge, Senior Sergeant Kevin Fitzgibbon, said the zones were great for improving safety for school children, but only if the rules were obeyed.
"We're proud to support this initiative aimed at educating parents and carers about how to use the zone more safely," Senior Sergeant Fitzgibbon said.
The Community Grants Scheme (Road Safety and Crime Prevention) made possible by Suncorp Insurance and the QPS is designed to enable local communities to develop and implement projects that will improve road safety and help reduce crime and fear of crime in Queensland.
The next round of applications for the Community Grants Scheme will open early this year. Interested community groups are encouraged to check the Suncorp Insurance safer roads website at suncorp.com.au/safer-roads for details on how to apply.
